Boys Council Evaluation
Boys Council Pilot Study 2008
We are very pleased to announce a research partnership with Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, and youth-serving organizations throughout the United States.
Eric Mankowski, PhD, Associate Professor, Applied Social & Community Psychology, Department of Psychology, Portland State University and a team of doctorate, masters’ level, and undergraduate students are joining with youth-serving organizations to study the impact of the Boys Council model for boys in participating groups this Spring, 2008, in organizations nationwide.
Boys and young men, ages 11 – 18, will provide pre- and post-survey data and will participate in “experimental” or comparison groups for 10 weeks during the Spring, 2008. Data from these surveys will be collected and analyzed by the researchers at PSU, and a report will be available on the effectiveness of the Boys Council model by late summer. We are seeking sites that serve boys 11-18 years old to collaborate with us. We are especially interested in collaborating with sites that may have access to boys in "control groups" as well as boys being served in Boys Council groups.
Are you looking for measurement scales for your Boys Council program? With the assistance of Portland State University, we’ve developed the Boys Council Evaluation Packet for use in your program! The packet includes instructions, forms, and public domain scales as well as author-permitted scales for Boys Council program evaluation.
These scales are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), National Center for School Engagement, and scholars interested in measuring boys' attitudes and behaviors, especially related to risk and protective behaviors associated with violence prevention, substance abuse prevention, and interpersonal skills.
Because these scales are in the public domain, we are making them available to you at no charge. You are free to use these tools in your programs.
Please share your stories, news, data, outcomes and analysis with us as you implement Boys Council and watch boys and young men develop healthy relationships, identities, and behaviors. With a collection of data from dedicated service providers and evaluators, we can strengthen opportunities to offer Boys Council to boys and young men everywhere! Thank You!
