The Council Evaluation

A pilot study of the Boys Council model (now named The Council for Boys and Young Men) in 2008 involving five organizations with 93 total participants in Council groups found significant increases in boys' School Engagement. Additionally, outcomes such as Self-efficacy related to Educational Goals, Ethnic Pride and Conflict Skills were moving in the expected direction after 10 weeks.

Additionally, over 98 teen boys who provided Satisfaction Surveys revealed high satisfaction on average in their Council groups.

For more information, view the Pilot Study Poster.

Are you interested in joining this national Council study?
Organizations are needed to partner with The Council, a Division of GCA/Tides, and Portland State University to evaluate The Council group effectiveness in improving boys’ lives.

If your site:

  • will serve 100 or more boys over a ten week period this Fall, 2008
  • can offer control group and The Council group data
  • can identify a site coordinator to manage the data gathering steps
  • can administer The Council Pre and Post Survey to boys
  • may possibly offer focus group data as well

then please join this movement to understand the potential of The Council program in making a difference for boys and young men.

The Council Pilot Study 2008
We are very pleased to announce a research partnership with Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, and youth-serving organizations throughout the United States.

2008 Boys Council Research TeamEric Mankowski, PhD, Associate Professor, Applied Social & Community Psychology, Department of Psychology, Portland State University and a team of doctorate, masters’ level, and undergraduate students are joining with youth-serving organizations to study the impact of The Council model for boys in participating groups this Spring, 2008, in organizations nationwide.

Boys and young men, ages 11 – 18, will provide pre- and post-survey data and will participate in “experimental” or comparison groups for 10 weeks during the Spring, 2008. Data from these surveys will be collected and analyzed by the researchers at PSU, and a report will be available on the effectiveness of the Council model by late summer. We are seeking sites that serve boys 11-18 years old to collaborate with us. We are especially interested in collaborating with sites that may have access to boys in "control groups" as well as boys being served in Council groups.

Are you looking for measurement scales for your Council program?

With the assistance of Portland State University, we’ve developed The Council Evaluation Packet for program evaluation! The packet includes instructions, forms, and public domain scales as well as author-permitted scales for The Council program evaluation.

These scales are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), National Center for School Engagement, and scholars interested in measuring boys' attitudes and behaviors, especially related to risk and protective behaviors associated with violence prevention, substance abuse prevention, and interpersonal skills.
